English: So it’s Sunday and I’m at work, But it’s not an ordinary job today.

It’s a treat for me because we are servicing the Foundation for Contemporary Arts’ 50th anniversary.  Now those who really know me, know that art is a passion of mine.  I frequent many galleries through out the boroughs when I can, visiting these galleries gives me insight to so many brilliant creative people, so meeting Joel Shapiro & spouse Ellen Phelan was something that I will always remember.  Walking into this huge four-story warehouse the first thing I spot is Joel’s signature design rectangular shapes in this huge sculpture, standing in the middle of the floor.  The studio’s nostalgic scent of paint was reminiscent to my grandfather’s body shop were he fixed and painted cars, and just then I was interrupted from my little state of endorphin by a voice saying,

“Is this the guy?”

Kara the event organizer and planner replies, “yes, this is Joseph from busy bee

Cleaning service, Joseph this is Joel Shapiro him and his wife Ellen own this studio.”

Joel smiles looks at me and says, “Ok Joseph tell your guys to be careful where they aim their mops.  Everything surrounded in blue tape means you & your crew need to stay at least 2 feet away from the object at all times.”  He told us to start in the pent house and work our way down.

So the crew and I take this warehouse freight elevator to the top floor and when the elevator doors open I notice the look of surprise on the guy’s faces.  Stepping out of the elevator we see this beautiful modern contemporary lounge area with antique sofas, floor to ceiling windows, which light the space perfectly with sunlight, and unique sculptures and pieces done by Joel, who strategically scattered them through out this incredible space.   The roof deck has the most incredible view of the Queens Borough Bridge (59th St bridge) and midtown Manhattan.  The deck, which was practically the size of the whole building’s roof, had huge pieces artworks, which later I had found out were lifted by a crane and placed on the roof. Joel and his assistant go out on to the roof deck and pop a bottle of red wine and start to cut cheese and eat crackers.   Joel offers me a glass of wine and I quickly decline.  He starts to laugh and says, “Smart man, if you would have accepted I would’ve been concerned about the safety of my sculptures” … Funny guy! I wake up out of my daze and start directing the guys about where to go, and Comlan begins to clean the windows one by one , Larry goes to work on the window sills and Leo tackles the bathrooms and sweeps and mopped the floors.   Our escorts, Monica & Mary, were impressed by the unison of effort on the guys part and quickly began complimenting the results. As we quickly finish the penthouse we are summoned to the 2nd floor, and this is where I meet Ellen Phelan, dressed in an urban style,  for a mature woman.   She knew my name and said,  “Hi Joseph” and holding her lit Newport cigarette in an extended holder, which was reminiscent of the 60’s image of the artistic creative & chic.  She starts to give directions at this point and we are running out of time so I had to split up the team. I send Comlan to the 3rd floor to take care of the floors and I stand in Ellen’s studio to make sure nothing is touched that shouldn’t be, and in the midst of all this I couldn’t help but glance at Ellen’s work, amazing paintings with deep defined colors.   Without realizing I hear a voice behind me say, “what’s your favorite?” I turn around and see it’s Ellen, and I point at a gray black & white painting of a statue, and she says , “How funny that’s my favorite too.”   She says “you can have it” and my eyes light up and as quick as I had risen I fall because I realized she was joking. I have to say that at that moment I realized how cool this lady was. She had the most playful sense of humor and we had great conversation,  and just knowing  that Joel & Ellen had been in the presence of people like Andy Warhol & Jean  Basquiat made me feel like I was privileged to a piece of art history.  Well at this point it’s late and we are wrapping up the job, Kara & Monica approach me, shake my hand, thank me, and start to hand out bottles of water to our guys and thank them all individually and commend them on a great job done.  Now that is class!

Sprzątamy dzisiaj na 50-ta rocznice Fundacji Sztuki Współczesnej

Ci którzy naprawdę mnie znają, wiedzą, że sztuka jest moją pasją. Często zwiedzam galerie kiedy tylko czas mi na to pozwala, odwiedzając te galerie mam możliwość zapoznać się ze sztuka wielu wspaniałych i kreatywnych ludzi, więc spotkanie Joel Shapiro (sławny amerykański współczesny rzeźbiarz pochodzący z NY)  & małżonką Ellen Phelan (malarka)było czymś co zawsze będę pamiętać. Wchodząc do tego ogromnego czteropiętrowego pawilonu pierwszą rzeczą rzucająca się w oczy była ogromna rzeźba projektu Joela z typowymi dla jego sztuki prostokątnymi kształtami stojąca na środku podłogi.

Zapach farby w studio nostalgicznie przypomniał mi warsztat samochodowy mojego dziadka gdzie naprawiał i malował samochody. Nagle z tego stanu zadumy wyrwał mnie glos mówiący:

“Czy to jest on?”

Kara organizatorka imprezy odpowiedziała, “tak, to jest Joseph z Busy Bee, Joseph to poznaj Joel Sapir on i jego żona Ellen są właścicielami tego studia. ”

Joel z uśmiechem popatrzył na mnie i powiedział: “Ok Joseph powiedz swoim ludziom zęby uważali, gdzie  dają swoje mopy. Wszystko otoczone w niebieską taśmą oznacza, że ty i twoja załoga muszą pozostać co najmniej 1 metr od obiektu przez cały czas.” Powiedział aby zacząć od góry.

Jedziemy windą towarową na górę do pent house (exkluzywny apartament na najwyższym piętrze) gdy drzwi windy otworzy się zauważam zaskoczenia na twarzach naszych ludzi.

Wychodząc z windy, widzimy piękny nowoczesny salon z antycznymi sofami, okna od podłogi do sufitu, unikatowe rzeźby wykonane przez Joela, strategicznie rozrzucone na całej przestrzeni tego niesamowitego pomieszczenia. Z tarasu dachu niesamowity widok na most na Queens Borough  (59-ta ulice) i środkowy Manhattan. Częściowo odaszony taras zajmował wielkość całego dachu budynku, miał ogromne dzieła sztuki, które jak się później dowiedziałem były tam umieszczone za pomocą dźwigu.

Joel i jego asystent wyszli na dach otworzyli butelkę czerwonego wina, zaczęli kroić ser i krakersy. Joel zaoferowali mi kieliszek wina który szybko odmówiłem. On zaczął się śmiać i mówi: “Inteligentny człowiek, gdybyś zaakceptował lampkę wina zaniepokoiłbym się o bezpieczeństwo moich rzeźb” … Śmieszny człowiek! Rozpoczynam kierowanie praca kto gdzie ma iść i co robić Comlan zaczyna myc okna jedno po drugim, Larry sprząta parapety i Leo sprząta łazienki. Nasza eskorta Monica & Mary, były pod wrażeniem harmonii pracy i zaczęły komplementować wyniki. Szybko zakończyliśmy penthouse wezwano nas na 2 piętro gdzie spotykam Ellen Phelan(malarka zona rzeźbiarza) ubrana bardzo stylowo . Znała moje imię i powiedział “Hi Joseph” paląc papierosa z lufka.

Zaczęła udzielać wskazówek co i jak sprzątać , a my mamy coraz mniej czasu, więc podzieliłem grupę na 2 zespoły. Wysłałem Comlana na 3 piętro żeby pompował podłogi ja zostałem w studio Ellen aby upewnić się, że nikt niczego nie dotknął, nie mogłem się powstrzymać aby nie zerknąć na dzieła Ellen, wspaniale obrazy z głębokimi żywymi kolorami. Słyszę głos za sobą mówiący: “Co Ci się podoba najbardziej?” Zapytała Ellen wskazałem na szaro-czarny obraz posągu a ona odpowiedziała: “Zabawne to tez mój ulubiony.” Po czym mówi: “możesz go mieć ” moje oczy zapaliły się tak szybko jak zgasły, szybko zdałem sobie sprawę, że sobie ze mnie żartuje. Zdałem sobie sprawę, jak niesamowitą była kobietą, znała takich ludzi jak Andy Warhol i Jean Basquiat.

Zrobiło się późno trzeba już kończyć pracę, Kara & Monica podchodzą do mnie, uścisnąć mi dłoń, dziękować, i zacząć rozdawać butelki wody dla naszych chłopaków dziękując im indywidualnie i chwaląc  za dobrze wykonana prace. To jest klasa!
